Background of the Study
Religious-based philanthropy has emerged as a pivotal mechanism in addressing poverty and social inequality, particularly in communities where faith plays a central role. In Ondo West Local Government Area, Ondo State, various religious organizations actively engage in charitable activities aimed at alleviating poverty. These philanthropic initiatives, rooted in spiritual doctrines and community values, offer both immediate relief and long-term socio-economic benefits (Ibrahim, 2023). The interplay between faith, charity, and poverty reduction underscores the potential for religious institutions to supplement governmental social programs, particularly in underserved areas. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited outreach, and sustainability of projects remain critical concerns (Olufemi, 2024). This study examines the extent to which religious-based philanthropy contributes to poverty reduction, exploring the dynamics between donor motivations, resource allocation, and community impact. By analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how philanthropic efforts driven by religious imperatives can mitigate poverty while fostering community cohesion (Adebayo, 2025). The investigation also considers the influence of cultural expectations and the evolving role of religious organizations in modern socio-economic contexts.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread implementation of religious philanthropy initiatives in Ondo West, significant challenges hinder their effectiveness in reducing poverty. Limited financial resources, poor management, and insufficient coordination with government programs have led to suboptimal outcomes. Consequently, vulnerable populations continue to experience high poverty levels, indicating a gap between philanthropic intentions and measurable impact. This study seeks to identify the underlying factors limiting the effectiveness of religious-based philanthropy and to propose actionable strategies to enhance its contribution to poverty reduction (Ibrahim, 2023; Olufemi, 2024).
